And now it's time to start the FF4 General thread. Let's not mention the ATB system here because it's already being discussed elsewhere. Maybe Kalisiin can tell us what she LIKES about this game.

While perhaps not as big a deal as FF7, this was also a really influential- and really cool- game when it was released. If I had to pick, I'd probably name it as my second-favorite game in the series.
Am I dating myself too much if I say that it was one of the first console-style RPGs that I played?

When I first heard FF4's overworld map music outside of Baron, it was the first time I remember ever being "blown away" by video game music. I think that deserves a special mention right there.
What's your favorite version of FF4? Mine is the one for Game Boy Advance, because it's fun experimenting with different party formations at the end, and not being stuck with the same ol' Cecil/Kain/Rosa/Rydia/Edge party every time. The new dungeons are pretty cool as well, and not as random as the ones in FF1 Advance. (Of course, Rosa's trial was made unfairly difficult, IMO, with the overly short and invisible time limit.)

I mentioned this in another thread, BUT...
The story itself of FF4 was good, and going to the moon was cool.

I'm not trashing you. It was just a tongue in cheek comment. I just wanted to start this topic and leave ATB complaints to other threads. I heard you say that much before, I just meant that in this thread, you can elaborate on what you like about the game. Or atleast complain about something else. Used or New thread already has ATB discussion and it would only be repetition to discuss it here as well. The GBA version is the easy version, so of course most people like the GBA version. I'm pretty sure the DS version increased the difficulty again, or atleast from what I've heard. I don't think I even got far in the SNES version. It was hard and by the time I really wanted to put effort into the game, I could play the GBA version instead. Cecil/Kain/Rosa/Rydia/Edge are the best characters though, so why wouldn't you want to end the game with them And yeah. FF4 had awesome music. I still love hearing the FF4 songs.

Moving on. Let's turn this back into a Final Fantasy 4 thread. What characters did everyone like? What did you dislike about them? What was everyone's favourite parts? Cecil made a good central character and I liked him as a Dark Knight. And Kain was a Dragoon~ I've always liked Dragoons for some reason. Jump is a fun ability. Of course, I really liked Rydia, but then I like Summoner characters in general.

I used to seriously cheat at games on emulators for lulz and I found it amusing that Rydia can learn Fira and Firaga but not Fire until the event where they asked her to overcome her fears of Fire. It kind of ruins the sentiment when she knows powerful flame spells >_>

I never finished the GBA version of the game, but as I recall, Palom and Porom were actually better casters than Rosa and Rydia in the SNES version- they picked up spells earlier and had higher MP. You could also probably make an argument for one of the other fighters in place of Edge, since his defense and HP are pretty low...
Did the DS version of the game also include all the extras from the GBA version, or did it switch them out for the new set of extras?
Also, has anyone played The After Years? I've heard kinda mixed reactions to that one... I haven't gotten to play it due to not owning any of the systems it's been released on, but I'm kinda hoping for an iOS port. If it crops up on DSiWare or whatever the 3DS equivalent is, that might be enough to convince me to upgrade my DS Lite to one of the newer models.

And a piece of advice...KEEP YOUR DS LITE!! Yes, get a DSiXL or 3DS...but do NOT get rid of your DS Lite. You will need it to flash Acekards if Ninty ever "upgrades" the firmware again, making them reject Acekards! You'll need a DS Lite to flash the new card firmware, to make it then work again in the DSiXL or 3DS. the beauty of the DS Lite is that they can't "upgrade" the firmware of it...so that you always have a way to patch the latest update needed to get around the latest firmware "upgrade" that Ninty does...which is not an upgrade at all, just another entry in blocking Acekards. I never even visit the DSiWare store for this reason...every once in a while it will try to force an "upgrade" on you in order to allow you to use the DSiWare Store...and every single time that "upgrade" is nothing more than their latest block on Acekards. In order to upgrade an Acekard to get around the latest block...you need a unit which will currently accept the acekard...so you can flash. and that is what makes a DS Lite so beautiful...it will always accept the Acekard, and there's nothing Ninty can do about it.

Rosa had more rounded stats though, why get a squishier healer for a little more MP? And Rydia can use Summons. The default party is a balanced party. It's pretty much just novelty to play the other characters.
And no, the DS version doesn't have the extra dungeons and you don't get to your other characters back. I don't think you can get The After Years on DS either. It's on WiiWare though...

Yeah, it's on WiiWare, and there's a PSP "collection" with the original game and The After Years.
Summons are nice, but after a point you're hitting a ceiling on the damage you can do in a single spell, anyway... Meteor and Flare should be doing plenty of damage by the endgame, and they've also always got Twin magic for multiple targets.

Rydia and Rosa are still more likable...

Rydia and Rosa are still more likable... Ok, now that's subjective. What makes them more likeable?

Palom and Porom have always reminded me a little too much of Bart and Lisa Simpson.
It would have been cool if Edward learned some early-to-mid-level White and Black Magic in the postgame. He's got the right costume for it, and he has close storyline ties to Tellah the Sage. Plus, FF4 needed a subversion of the "grown men are warriors; women and young boys are mages" trend.

I dunno... Early-to-mid level Magic, with the possible exceptions of a handful of 'utility' spells (Drain, Osmose, Peek/Libra, and Heal/Esuna come to mind offhand) doesn't seem like it would be that useful by the endgame... If I were to come up with a change to 'improve' Edward, I'd give him a couple support-effect songs and the ability to select his songs instead of having it be a random effect (a la the DS FF3 and FF5) or make Harps hit all enemies.
