Believe it or not, outside of battle, the healing spell with the best MP-to-recovery value is Cure 1. (The same rule applies in FF7.) But yeah, you have a point.

Very true! But still. The way I see it, expanding Sing or giving Edward the ability to (potentially) put conditions on the whole enemy party for free puts him in a role that none of the other characters fill- whereas giving him low-level magic just makes him a weaker version of the other mages. (The pedant in me also wants to point out that, although neither of them are available in the endgame, that Tellah and FuSoYa are already male mage-type characters... You could make a case for Golbez, too, although he's non-playable.) - HC

Of course it's subjective. But the default party honestly have more reason to be there. Palom and Porom are just a bunch of unremarkable mage kiddies. And it sounds kind of dodgy in the story sense...
"No, Rosa, it's too dangerous~ I'm going to take the little kids instead."
