Might as well put a post here to go with the others in these forums.
Best RPG ever. Full stop.

Mind saying WHY you feel FF6 is the best RPG ever?
Would make for some interesting conversation, methinks.
At the risk of hijacking the topic, I personally do not agree that FF6 is the best RPG ever. But I'd like to see some discussion on both sides of this.

You don't think that Final Fantasy 6 is the best RPG ever. You've also never played Final Fantasy 6. Coincidence or....?
Anyway, if you must know why Final Fantasy 6 is awesome, some bullet points:
- Great storyline: an engaging first act and followed by a solid, nonlinear second act after the world and characters have been introduced which gives the player some control over the narrative. A wide variety of likeable protagonists with disparate abilities and a memorable villian. The whole thing is capped by a 20-minute ending sequence- it's truly amazing and epic for a 16-bit game.
- Well-polished battle system, removing the warts from the ATBs of FF4 and 5. Adds several clever uses of the ATB (EG Cyan's Sword Techs, which are powerful but require you to stay idle for several seconds as they charge) and resolves most of the issues under 4 and 5.
- Some of the best visuals and sound of the 16-bit era (and do note that this is not my top criteria). Although there do exist better-looking 16-bit games, FF6 definitely holds its' own among them, and debatably compares well against some early 32-bit-era games.
My only real complaint about the game- and I stress that this is minor- is that the character development system (which allows you to slowly learn magic by equipping special items that also change your stat boosts as you gain levels) isn't as interesting as some of the other games in the series. It was also somewhat disappointed that the top-level magic spells (which everyone can learn) vastly outclass your characters' 'natural' abilities by the time you reach the end of the game.

Actually, my main reason for posting what I did...was to generate a response from you that could lead to further discussion. Your initial post didn't leave much room or opening for discussion. No, I never played FF6, so I can't really comment on it. But there's other people on this board...and now there's some meat to discuss for those who wish to.

One reason Kalisiin might be hesitant to play FF6 is because it has ATB. However, its ATB is much more skillfully handled than FF4's, and there's an option you can set (from "Active" to "Wait") which prevents enemies from attacking while you select subcommands. (When FF4 was released, ATB was still a new idea, and had a lot of imperfections.)
On the whole, the gameplay and story in FF6 are matched by few RPGs, past or present. I won't say anything about it here, though, so it'll all be fresh and new for you if you choose to play it.

This is one of those games that I really need to play again one of these days.

Vireo's right. But the way you describe it, and the way Vireo says the ATB is possible to stop enemies from attacking while you're selecting subcommands...well, I might be willing to try this one sometime. But I have lots of others on my list first.
But, see, now we have a little bit of discussion going on, and this is a good thing.
I'd like to see a lot more discussion happening, it could attract even more people to this Board.

I love FF6 ^_^ I'm rather known for being a Terra fangirl.
I always set the ATB to Wait. I don't want to be attacked while I'm looking through a huge list of spells/rages for the one I want.
