So now I'm opening the FF9 General thread. I really liked this title. It was funny while still feeling dramatic and meaningful. Scenes involving Quena or Steiner were always kind of funny. And the cutscenes involving Eidolons were impressive. I also love how the cities felt populated with all the people walking around in it.

I really enjoyed this game! I've always meant to go back and play it again, but I've never quite gotten around to it. It had kind of a wonky implementation of the ATB, as I recall- I seem to remember that unlike the other games in the series, enemies could keep queueing actions during spell animations, so you ended up with a zillion moves queued up at all times... It didn't prevent me from enjoying the game, but I felt it was kind of a weird change. So how long did it take you to figure out that Kuja was a guy? - HC

It's a well-made game overall, but it had a few too many "Lost-Forevers" for my taste. Also, if you made one false move, it would be too easy to progress the story with no way to backtrack and get stuck in a situation where the stakes were too high.
"Oops! You stepped out of the forest, which is now blocked off. The next town is about five game-hours away. Hope you built enough levels and brought enough healing items. What? You didn't? Sucks to be you, then."
Moreover, the steal rate is too low, especially for bosses. Interestingly, in all the FF9 Let's Plays I've watched, Zidane has much better luck stealing items than I ever did. Guess the game somehow knows I'm playing and adjusts its difficulty accordingly.

Playing against bosses with an emulator is fun Attempt to steal, fail, load state, then repeat for the next few hours. Luck based challenges suck <_< Of course, all fixed plot RPGs are full of lost forevers. There's a reason why games like this expect people to use lots of save files. I think it's pretty obvious that if you've triggered a cutscene, you'd probably not want to overwrite your last file for a while... I don't really remember the ATB system being too much of a problem, but I guess it might of been slighty wonky. It wasn't really that hard though, especially since you pretty much skipped Summon animations. Most spells are short... And it was obvious that Kuja was a guy. I kinda liked Kuja, he was like a cooler version of Sephiroth.

Could always be the magic of video editing at work, too. Trying to steal for 20 minutes doesn't really make for an interesting LP. - HC
