The city of Dusk lay on the edge of the Glowing Sea, below the three beacons. The three beacons had shone even before the time of the First Ascended, calling the winged ships of traders and explorers from the Great Cities. They said that the First herself had created the five fast caverns that the city was built within from the vast cliffs along the Glowing Sea's edge, and like most legends, there was a grain of truth to it.
Beyond the city lay the caves; miles of caves concealing unknown secrets. Deep beyond them, down miles of twisting paths through the dark places where the creations of the Laughing Madness still dwelt, beyond the strange rooms where men seemed to grow light and fall to the sky, and up the great staircase lay the Gardens, where fruits and grains grew beneath the sun, staring unblinking from the apex of the sky. The gardens extended as far as any had traveled; new shifts of workers cultivated and harvested their fruits, although those who dwelt in Dusk's dim light took care not to stay under the harsh sun for too long.
Above the city was the cliffs; up the cliffs, and beyond it, lay the wastes. Far away from the Glowing Sea's light and warmth, the wastes grew darker and colder with each step- their surface, cold as ice and smooth as glass, offered neither shelter nor sustenance to travelers, no matter how canny. Though the astronomers swore that there were towers far across them, known only by the winkings of the stars, none had traveled far enough to find them.
Only a small order knew the secrets of the wastes- that deep within them, hidden by their vast darkness, lay the Shrine of Ascension, containing the artifact that could transform men into gods...

(No, this has nothing to do with the screenshot I posted a while back. I'm not sure if I'm going to do any more with it, but we'll see...)
