I think it's only after you hit level 2 of the attack spells that they start hitting all enemies- still an improvement over the original, though. Also, you really weren't kidding about Sages getting low HP- my party is at level 7 right now; my Viking and Paladin are both in the 120-140ish range, my Ninja is at 80, and my Sage has, like, 40. Her primary expenditure of MP so far has been keeping herself alive. - HC

Too bad FF1 doesn't have Life Nuts!
When I played, my Red Mage, White Mage, and Ninja always had about the same HP. Sorry to hear about your Sage.

In light of that, I may re-think the Sage when I'm playing and just go with the White Mage...or maybe a Red Mage, some healing and some attack that way.
I still like the Dark Knight, Paladin, Ninja, so those three places are set.
Perhaps I should go with the Red Mage. does Paladin get much Healing?
If so, I might even go the way of a Viking in the the Party.
If that was the case, it would be
Viking, Dark Knight, Paladin, Ninja
if the Red Mage/white Mage then it would go like this Dark Knight, Paladin, Ninja, Mage (Red or White)

As I said before, Paladin learns the first four levels of White Magic, so they do get some healing. Red Mage gets a little of everything, but if you have a Paladin already, IMO it would be better to have a Ninja than a Red Mage. (Someone has to cast the more defensive spells that both Paladin and Red Mage lack.)
On second thought, maybe Dark Knight/Paladin/Ninja/Red Mage would be the way to go. A lot of magical balance, and no "weak links" in the physical sense. Plus, you get plenty of light armor (Flame Mail and Ice Mail) later on. (The Floating Castle has a second Flame Mail and a second Ice Mail.) But on the other hand, a White Mage would be good to have in later boss battles, if for nothing else but CUR4 and HEL4 (CUR4 on the group).
I'd recommend against Viking. They're basically just Knights with worse armor selection, as far as I know.
And you can always create multiple saves, each with a different party, to see which ones you like the best. That's the beauty of emulators!

You'll definitely want decent coverage of the White magic tree and most of the Black magic tree- remember that spells are capped at 9 uses a level in FF1. The support spells also seem pretty decent this time around, and there are a couple enemy types even early on that have high-ish Evade (making the first-level B/T spell Lock pretty useful). With your proposed party, I'd go Sage or White Mage as your last character... Extra heal batteries are always a good thing.
If you wanted to try something nontraditional, you could go offense-heavy, take a Red or Black Mage in your last slot, and focus on healing with potions outside battle. This would be expensive early on and I'm not sure how you'd fare against enemies with big multitarget attacks, but it might work.
Paladins have a better armor selection than Dark Knights; just getting that out there.

Paladins have a better armor selection than Dark Knights; just getting that out there. How do their selections differ? According to that tutorial sage in Coneria, both classes can use light armor, helmets, shields, and gauntlets.

I tried one briefly, and it looked like my Dark Knight was blocked from equipping the Chain armor (no icon) sold at Corneria.

Hm, strange. Guess the sage wasn't exactly correct, then. Another sage said Red Mages could use knives, but he was wrong.

HA HA DISREGARD THAT
Just double-checked; Dark Knights can equip Chain armor. I must have been thinking of Vikings or Ninja.

I really am gonna have to try this sometime, seriously...but I really am fixed on DQ9 getting the level of completion I set out to get. I can be very single-minded at times.

Nope. Still do not have the level of completion I want.

You posted a while ago about finishing all the lists, iirc- what do you have left? Some of the accolades?
