So I guess one of the things Square Enix announced at E3 was Final Fantasy Dimensions, which is a "new" SNES-style Final Fantasy game targeted at iOS (the quotes around new are because it was apparently released for Japanese cell phones a while back). It looks kinda cool and I'm going to keep an eye on it, but reading reactions to this has reaffirmed my opinion that Square's fanbase is basically unpleasable at this point. My favorite criticism: "It looks like it was made in RPG Maker!". No, you dipshits, RPG Maker was made to look like the SNES-era Final Fantasy games. - HC

This is the game we SHOULD have gotten for GBA. Sure, the remakes of 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 were nice (as was the remake of Final Fantasy Adventure/Seiken Densetsu), but it would've been unexplainably awesome if we got a new entry in the series. Regardless, I'll be keeping my eye on it, even though I can never see myself with a smartphone. Could at least make for some entertaining Let's Play videos. As for RPG Maker, well... RM2K3 was made to look like SNES-era Final Fantasy. RM2K was made to look like SNES-era Dragon Quest. And RMXP and RMVX were made to look like PSP-era Final Fantasy.

Well, I'm getting rid of my smartphone once my contract is up with the almighty evil Verizon. i'm getting a Kindle Fire, that's all I need...it will do apps, and it runs on Wi-Fi, and that means no $80 a month cell phone bill. To hell with the cell companies, I've had it - I'm going to a 10-buck-a-month plan and that's plain it.
Sick of giving my money to these folks. I got a personal grudge on Verizon right now, anyway, because of their deceptive practices. They offered Mom a new phone, when she was 20 months in...and because of that, she thought she was out of contract and ported, and they nail her with early termination. they should have made it very clear that she was not yet out of contract.
I fought with them and they would not waive the $70 fee which they could do...in spite of the fact that mom and I had both been Verizon customers for years. So I told them fine...it will cost you guys far more than the $70 - because once I'm out of contract you're losing me...and anyone else I can influence.
Here's hoping this game can be done on the Kindle Fire.

I totally would have loved something like this on the GBA- its a shame nothing like that materialized from Square Yeah, I don't know that I'd buy a smartphone specifically for gaming- I do like mine, but my contract's up in a few months and I've been contemplating seeing if I can get out of my data plan or switch to one of the cheap pay-as-you-go phones and get a tablet or something... Smartphone games are kind of a mixed bag due to the intense downward pressure exhibited by the app store- the fact that it's basically impossible to sell a game for more than $3 a copy unless you're already established chases away many 'full-scale' projects. Those that do exist are usually ports as well. There's some hope/wishful thinking that Square's iPhone exclusives (including Final Fantasy Dimensions) will make it to a real platform eventually- Vita or 3DS or the various online marketplaces- but we'll see. That's a same that you've had such bad experiences with Verizon, Kalisiin- I was with Verizon for a couple years until I jumped to AT&T, and I didn't have any issues like that. That's really sleazy. :/ - HC eTA: it looks like FFD is targeted at Android devices too, so I expect it'll be available on the Fire eventually.

I can't imagine why anyone wants a Smartphone when you can get a Kindle for a lot cheaper and just use Wi-Fi...no data plans...no eighty-buck-a-month cell bills. My experience with Verizon was not so bad, but my mom's was...and what they did to her was real sleazy. It put me off Verizon forver, and I told them it was gonna cost them more than the $70 they hounded my mom for...because they were gonna lose me and everyone else I could influence...and I meant it. For waiving a $70 fee as a goodwill gesture, it could have bought them loads of good PR...or at least saved them from a lot of bad. I meant it when I told them it was gonna cost them more than 70 bucks.

Well, a smartphone fits in your pocket and has a couple features a tablet generally (AFAIK) doesn't- GPS being the big one offhand. Being able to easily check a map with a location marked in a strange city without needing to hunt for a WiFi connection is a big plus. I mean, I could certainly make do without it, but it's nice to have. Having your calendar, email, and an effectively infinite supply of notebook paper on an object the size of an Altoids tin that you carry in your pocket with you every day anyway is a plus.
That being said- I do see an increasing number of tablets and E-Readers on the train these days, and I myself have contemplated switching to a dumbphone-and-tablet combo.

Dumbphone and tablet works for me. I have a Magellan GPS in m car - and there is nothing else that my smartphone can do that a tablet can't.
Wait!!! I take that back...my smartphone can run up a bill of eighty bucks a month!!!
Of course, if you use public transportation (I gather you must as you mentioned the train) you might not have a car, and therefore not have gotten a separate GPS unit for your car.
Public transportation where I live is non-existent. Not everyone lives in the big cities, ya know!! Some of us live out in the boonies.
Everyone who lives here has the zits Monroe County sure is the pits Anyone with half a brain has to split Cuz this is where God squats when He gets the shitz.
I live here only because my mom won't move, and SOMEONE has to be here to take care of her as she gets older. she doesn't need help now, but she likely will someday, and I'll be here when that happens. No one else in the family will, that's for sure!!

Well, don't get me wrong- if the tablet + dumbphone combo works for you, great! I'm not telling you you should be doing anything else- I'm just saying, not everybody's situation is the same, and I can easily imagine a hypothetical user who prefers a smartphone. - HC

This game was released last week- I grabbed it as soon as I could and gave it a try. I really wanted to like this one- a new FF in the style of the SNES ones! What's not to like?- but I find myself overall pretty unimpressed. While they definitely have the look of the old games down, the soul behind them doesn't seem to have been captured- the writing isn't that great and the great many subtle visual callbacks to older games in the series feel like pandering (remember the weird octagon-shaped roofs on towers in FF5? The rounded cave floors in FF4? They're all back!). The game's plot and systems appear to crib very heavily from Final Fantasy V; although they don't actually let you play with it in the free demo chapter, FF Dimensions' Job System appears to be a beefed-up version of FFV's which adds new jobs and the ability to equip multiple abilities. The game is purchased chapter-by-chapter; the free prologue is about two hours long and doesn't even introduce the job system by the time it's complete. The first chapter is $3; the latter three are $10 each. The while thing is very pricey for an iPhone game- part of me applauds the effort to pull prices up to a point where 'full-size' development is viable, bu there's another part of me that thinks maybe I should just buy Silversword five times instead. I am enough of a tool that I will probably pick up the first chapter at least; I'll let you guys know what the word is, but my hopes are not particularly high. - HC

Please do let us know. If it's free the first chapter might be worth it if for no other reason than something fun to look at.

Well, I dunno. I should warn you that not only does it have an ATB, the ATB is pretty intense on default settings.
Really, if you're in the mood to give FF or something FF-ish another chance, I hate to say it, but there are three or four other games I'd recommend first.

But if it has ATB I probably would not like it very much.

Paradise Blue is free, too, and seems to be a much better game to boot.

Yes, Paradise Blue is essentially FF3 re-imagined by an avant-garde Spanish landscape artist. But like most RPG Maker 2003 games, it has ATB.
